VIRGINIA SCHINDLER AUDRAIN, Class of 1938, died in October of 2010. An excellent student and popular girl at Normandy (and award-winning Girl Scout), she returned as an outstanding and popular home economics teacher much prized for her sponsorship of Tri-Hi-Y, the girl’s leadership group. Mrs. Audrain's combinationof excellent classroom teaching and a cheerful, matter-of-fact personality made her a favorite. As Virginia Schindler she wrote one of the most poignant stories ever to appear in the Normandy Courier, following the death of the great science teacher and Nature Trail originator Wendell Shay. She had exactly one afternoon to do the story because the issue had to go press as graduation neared. It is among the most notable pieces ever to appear in the history of American high school journalism. Virginia was the wife of thelate James Audrain, mother of Donald Audrain, a grandmother and great grandmother. She was the sister of Jack Schindler (Class of 1944). ''When the Alumni Courier did a page on Mr. Shay, his daughter Michelle Shay Likes (Class of 1955) sent me a copy of the article Mrs. Audrain did way back in 1938. It's an astounding piece of work."After that issue of the Alumni Courier appeared I was surprised to get a note from Mrs. Audrain and even more surprised to find she was VirginiaSchindler. This set up a series of ongoing phone conversations with her. She was sharp as a tack, very witty too. When I told her I didn't want to hold her on the phone too long she said, 'Oh, don't worry about it. About all I can do now is talk on the phone anyway.' I could have talked with her forever." |
