Shirley Hatch (Hooker)

MS. SHIRLEY HATCH HOOKER, who taught at Garfield from 1955 to 1984, died June 17. She was 89 and lived in Normandy. A Kansas native, she earned her bachelor's degree from Washington University and master's degree from Webster University and worked in the Small Arms plant before teaching. Retiring from Garfield, Mrs. Hooker didn't exactly retire. She volunteered in early reading development with 3rd graders and continued at Garfield right through the past school year. She was treasurer of Meals on Wheels in Normandy, served at the Ladies of Charity Caritas Service Center, and participated in numerous other civic endeavors She was the mother of three. A memorial service took place June 24 at Normandy United Methodist Church followed by a reception at the University of Missouri Alumni House.
