Helen Wallace (Hoffman)

English teacher enjoyed Silver Skates

Many Normandy students on campus World's Fair of 1904. in the late 1930s and early 1940s will remember the English teacher Helen Wallace. Miss Wallace (later Mrs. Hoffman) in '40 A St. Louis native who attended Roosevelt High, she was an early member of the Silver Skates speed skating club at the Winter Garden Ice Rink on the east side DeBaliviere Avenue south of Delmar Boulevard. Many Normandy students regularly skated at the beloved  indoor ice palace, originally constructed for the She came to Normandy after she earned degrees in education and guidance and counseling in 1938. When she married Karl Hoffmann in 1942, she left for Charlotte, North Carolina, where he was serving in the Army. In 1954 they moved to Webster Groves and Mrs. Hoffman became a real estate agent. She was a member of the Wednesday Club. Mr. Hoffman died in 2000. Mrs. Hoffman passed away October 18, 2005, at the age of 90. She is survived by two daughters, a son and two grandchildren.
