Olive M Kite

One of the truly unique faculty members in Normandy High history, the beloved English and Humanities teacher OLIVE KITE died August 18, 2008 of heart failure. She had been in hospice care first in St. Louis and then in the home of her nephew John and his wife Mikki in New Orleans, where her body was given to medical science as she had instructed. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, grand and great-grand too. She was a friend of the late and much-missed Normandy teacher Nellie Browning. Few of her students knew that Miss Kite had been a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame at one time, from 1933 through 1937. She taught the humanities at the high school and college levels for 43 years. She was the longtime editor of the Normandy Retired Teachers' Association newsletter Nor-Sen. A memorial service in Normandy took place September 20 at St. Ann's Catholic Church. "She was a favorite teacher," said Pam Myers Wolf, Class of 1966 and Alumni Association historian, "but she could be intimidating. A couple of years ago we discovered she was living across the hall from our Dad at his retirement apartment. They became good friends.”  She was interesting, sassy and quick-witted, a true delight. She loved talking with former students. "Her memorial was very nice. There were retired teachers, former students and St. Ann parishioners. I took a moment to share stories about Miss Kite with her family and they thought my descriptions sounded 'just like Aunt Ollie!'"
