MABEL DITMEYER, longtime Normandy District nurse and a High School favorite during the 1950s, died June 4, 2007. She is survived by her husband Roland and three children, all well-known Normandy graduates Steve'59; Christine'62; and Betty '75. Efficient, calm and in-charge as nurse, Mrs. Ditmeyer attracted students just to visit in her office with her charming personality and breezy conversation. Behind the scenes she helped steer the annual High School drives to provide gift baskets for needy families in the District at Thanksgiving and Christmas, baskets which included everything needed for complete turkey dinners, along with many staples for the home. The challenge, she said once, was to get what the families what they needed for the holidays to them without making them feel they were receiving charity or being pitied in some way. "They sometime won't take the basket at first. You have to give the gift and leave them their dignity, too."
