Comments:

I attended UMSL, 1966-1970, graduating with a B.A. in History. Two years of US Army service, 1970-72, followed, including one year stationed in West Germany as telecommunications specialist. Then came Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, New York, 1972-73 attaining an M.S. in Journalism. I began my professional career in 1973 first in New York, then Munich (those two places with Radio Free Europe), Vienna (reporter for a Chase Manhattan Bank business newsletter) and finally Hamburg, Cork (Ireland) and Berlin, April 1978 until early retirement in September 2011, with the international English-language service of the wire agency deutsche presse-agentur (German Press Agency) dpa. On retirement, moved with my wife back to Munich.

Update December 2013. Now retired for more than 2 years and have stayed very busy with hobbies, travel in Europe, and family. I do public relations work for a local baseball club in Munich and I also help the coaches of the various teams - great fun, still getting out on a ballfield, pitching and taking batting practice, etc.! I still do occasional journalistic work for the German Press Agency, and still play/perform with my guitar in pubs here (as I had done in Hamburg, Ireland and Berlin previously). I ain't great, but on the other hand, nobody throws me out of the taverns, so I guess it's okay enough (and I get lots of free drinks...) So I have no complaints about retirement...

Update September 2016: In the meantime my wife Karin and I have moved again. We now live in a beautiful lakeside village called Seeshaupt, located on the southern tip of Starnberg Lake, some 30 miles south of Munich. This small-town Bavarian lifestyle fits us just fine. The move notwithstanding, I am still active in helping out my Munich baseball club with PR work and stadium announcer during home games; I'm still active as a free-lance journalist; and still pursuing my hobby of playing guitar, including in local taverns and small-stage appearances.

Oops, missed yer birthday, Dave. (Blame it on daylights savings time issues, plus the fact that I'm over here in backward Europe...). Anyway, hope you're doing well, and wish many more happy retuns.

Happy Birthday, Doug! Hope you enjoy a great day. Are you watching any of the baseball going on over here? This year has been and continues to be quite competitive. I never thought it would be routine for pitchers to throw in the mid to high 90s...and then batters be able to hit the ball at that speed. Take care!

Sorry to hear about Richard's passing. My deepest sympathy to his family, Another old Bel-Ridge grade school buddy gone. I always remember him as one of the gentler souls in the old neighborhood. RIP, Richard.
